The Chateau is at the heart of Jumilhac le Grand,and is sited on a rocky spur over looking the Isle river.Records go back to 480AD when it was the seat of the diocese and seigniory,constantly reinforced throughout the ages,the original little fort is now part of the outer lines of defence used to protect the Vicomte of Limoges in the French/English wars in 1152. | ||||||||||||||||||||

Coveted by Philippe Auguste and then Richard the Lionheart until the Fatal crossbow wound at Chalus in 1199.The castle was taken by Edward the Black Prince at the beginning of the Hundred Years War (1337-1453)and retaken by du Guesclin in 1370 and dismantled. In 1580 Antoine Chapelle a master of forges in the Limousin restored it as a fortified castle in the Renaissance style,As he had helped the future King Henri IV to finance and organise his war campaigns,when the monarch came to the throne,Antoine Chapelle was made a Count in gratitude.The History of the Chateau carries on up till the present and has its own legend of true love in the form of Louise de Hautefort (1610) Every Sunday morning in the months of July to August,the farm market can be found in front of the Chateau, in the main square of Jumilhac le grand you will find a very good Restaurant with seating indoor and out which offer a range of quality food.There are also two bars in this small town.The village has bakeries just near the Chateau and the other at the top of the square,both bake fresh bread each day. The local shop is well stocked for your every day needs. The' caves' is a local wine shop that stocks a very good range from the moderate to the expensive. | ||||||||||||||||||||
The gold museum is laid out in the building on the market place,the museum relates the history of the gold mines and the items found preserving the Gallo-Roman mines at Fouilloux and retraces each step in the working of the precious metal,from extraction to the working and use in making jewellery and coins,also in industry and gilding. | ||||||||||||||||||||
